In January-September 2008, the output of agricultural products in Uzbekistan amounted to 7.686 trillion soums (US$5.925 billion) and increased by 4.1 per cent in comparison with January-September 2007. In the total volume of agricultural production the output of plant-growing was 4.105 trillion soums (up 2.2 per cent) and that of animal husbandry 3.581 trillion soums (up 6.2 per cent).
In total agricultural output, the share of crop products was 53.4 per cent and animal products 46.6 per cent.
Plant-growing. According to the preliminary data, the total sown area of agricultural crops in 2008 in farms of all types was 3.568 million hectares or 8,000 hectares more than in 2007. The area under grains was 1.542 million hectares (up 4,000 year-on-year), cotton 1.418 million hectares (down 32,700), potatoes - 59,200 hectares (up 3,600 hectares), vegetables - 157,900 hectares (down 1,900 hectares), forage crops - 271,800 hectares (down 18,200 hectares).
HARVESTING
As of 1 October 2008, farms of all types have produced 6.413 million tonnes of grains (up 0.5 per cent year-on-year), including 6.19 million tonnes of spiked cereals, of which 6.026 million tonnes were wheat. The share of wheat in total volume of produced grain was 94.0 per cent, corn 2.5 per cent, rice 0.4 per cent and other grains 3.1 per cent.
As of 1 October 2008, the government purchased 2.264 million tonnes of raw cotton, which is 7.3 per cent lower compared to the same period of 2008.
Farmers produced 1.001 million tonnes of potatoes, 3.686 million tonnes of vegetables, 675,500 tonnes of melons and gourds, 911,700 tonnes of fruit and berries, 489,600 tonnes of grapes. Animal husbandry.
As of 1 October 2008, the cattle population in farms of all types increased by 498,200 or 6.9 per cent, of which 203,100 were cows (up 6.6 per cent), sheep and goats by 693,800 (up 5.4 per cent) and poultry by 3.019 million (up 12.5 per cent).
In January-September 2008, farms of all types produced 924,700 tonnes of meat in living weight (up 6.0 per cent year-on-year), 3.964 million tonnes of milk (6.2 per cent), 1.784 billion eggs (8.5 per cent), 19,300 tonnes of wool (6.1 per cent) and 844,300 pieces of karakul (15.3 per cent).
PRIVATE FARMS
As of 1 October 2008, the number of operating private farms was 218,000. In comparison with the corresponding period of the previous year their number increased by 3,600.
The total area of lands allotted to private farms was 5.893 million hectares, on average 27 hectares per farm.
The number of workers was 1.718 million persons.
As of the 1 October 2008, private farms had 465,000 heads of cattle (including 159,200 cows), 978,600 sheep and goats, 2417,800 heads of poultry. In comparison with January-September 2007, the number of cattle has increased by 61,500 (15.2 per cent), cows 27,500 (20.9 per cent), sheep and goats 75,500 (8,4 per cent), poultry 1.342 million (2.2 times).
SILKWORM BREEDING:
In January-September 2008, 23,450.8 tonnes of silkworm cocoons were produced in Uzbekistan (up 9.2 per cent), including 1,1 tonnes of prime quality and 16,700 tonnes of elite grade, 223,9 tonnes - seed cocoons, 9,727.9 tonnes of the first grade, 6,238.2 tonnes of the second grade, 781.4 tonnes of nonstandard, 4,359.4 tonnes of off-quality and 2,102.2 tonnes of karapachak.
