Kazakhstan won't ban exports of grain from 2008 harvest   Print  E-mail
Kazakhstan will not place a ban on exports of grain from the 2008 harvest,Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov said at a government meeting on October 16.

"I can say assuredly that the government is firstly guaranteeing the supply of grain in the coming year and secondly that prices on baked goods will not increase. We have all the stabilizing mechanisms to do this," he said.

Kazakhstan harvested more than 17.3 million tonnes of grain in gross weight this year, enough for domestic consumption and to export up to 6 million tonnes.

Kazakhstan had banned wheat exports from mid-April 2008 until September 1,although no restrictions were placed on flour exports. The decision was based on the need to ensure the country's food safety and to not allow negative consequences on the domestic market resulting from the significant rise in prices on the global grain marker and a shortage of food grain throughout the world.
