The cabinet approved yesterday additional transfers for BGN 207mn (EUR 105.8mn) to the agricultural sector following a series of protest rallies by milk and grain producers. The transfer is designed to tone down the tensions in the sector stemming from the freezing of EU pre-accession funds to the sector although the line local payment agency claims that the EU funds will be almost fully utilised. The cabinet’s decision is consulted with the European Commission and will secure a total of BGN 60mn to milk producers. Payments will start as of the beginning of the next month. The remaining BGN 147mn comprise national co-financing to EU grants and will be disbursed for land preparation by the end of the year. The financing will be provided from the reserve account of the state agricultural fund.
