Live poultry market a success with biosecurity steps

China’s Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) held a joint workshop to enhance biosecurity at live poultry markets, a major source of avian influenza and other animal diseases. The workshop was followed by a field visit to Jiangcun wholesale market in Guangdong Province where in April 2011 both the MOA and FAO launched a pilot program of ‘public-private partnership’ (PPP) management model. Assisted by domestic and overseas experts, the market built a vehicle washing and disinfection station, introduced poultry transportation facilities, high pressure washers and disinfectant apparatus, improved the animal vaccination program, and offered training to its management staff and poultry vendors. These steps have greatly enhanced biosecurity awareness and practices.
