Exhaustive Analytics of the Black Sea pulses market from the global perspective

2017/18 pulse season turned out to be successful for the Black Sea region. Russia and Ukraine increased pea exports to 2.2 MMT owing to bumper crops in both countries.

The Indian import duty imposed on peas had no particular impact on their deliveries from the Black Sea countries. Despite weakening demand and low world prices, they did press Canada and the U.S. in the Indian pea market due to a competitive price. Overall, India stepped up purchases from Russia and Ukraine to 650 KMT this past season versus 270 KMT in the previous 2016/17 marketing year.

The 2018/19 season features a 15-20% crop decrease in both Ukraine and Russia. The export potential will fall against MY 2017/18, and doubt remains whether it will be fully realized. Therefore, opening new markets continues to be of immediate interest to the Black Sea countries as well.
