Ukraine: Agricultural holdings
and land market OUTLOOK
Ukraine has a quarter of the world's black soils and about 54% of all land in the country is used as arable land.
From 30 to 60 Ukrainian companies operate now about 2 Ml ha of the richest land of Ukraine. These companies are the greatest producers of grain and oil crops, they use modern ag technology, the companies export great share of agricultural produces.
Meanwhile, operations with the agricultural land will start in Ukraine most likely only from 2008 or 2009. Even after all laws are voted for and the moratorium for sale and purchase of land is cancelled, the land market will not become transparent immediately.
The land market will be greatest challenge for Ukrainian economy in the nearest 2-3 years. To know the tendencies of the land market development will be of great advantage for the far seeing investors.
q Who will be the main land market players?
q How will the role of the biggest land owners be modified?
q What new opportunities will appear for investors after 2008?
q What will be the role of the government at the initial stage of land market formation?
