A speculative buckwheat market in Ukraine


Traditionally, since five years ago, the start of the buckwheat season in Ukraine has been marked by an information campaign claiming that the country is allegedly short of this product and, therefore, prices are to grow. And the new 2017/18 season is no exception. In turn, UkrAgroConsult will also traditionally try to dismantle this myth.

Owing to high margins of buckwheat, growers continued expanding its plantings in the country. The planted area for the 2017 harvest increased to a five-year high of over 180 Th ha.

The buckwheat harvest is in full swing now. Farmers have completed it on 40% of this crop’s acreage, and Ukrainian buckwheat production can already be forecast to increase to its highest level since 2013.
