Almost no sunseed left in Ukraine for importers

In May 2018, Ukraine exported this season’s smallest monthly sunseed volume of 1.4 KMT. It was down 63% from the previous month and down 75.4% from May 2017, reports UkrAgroConsult.

Export statistics for the current 2017/18 season (September-May) are much lower than a year ago: 29.3 KMT versus 182.4 KMT, respectively. In addition, over the period since 2000, only MY 2004/05 saw smaller sunseed shipments in September-May (just about 11 KMT). As expected, strong domestic demand from crushers took its toll in the conditions of a shrunk sunseed crop.

In the current 2017/18 season, Ukrainian sunseed exporters face not only an almost 50% drop in the number of importers but also a significant contraction of the remaining end markets.

At the same time, almost 80% of total exports went to European countries, UkrAgroConsult’s analysts note. Turkey accounts for 6%, Libya and Georgia for 2% each, but exports top these countries do not exceed 2 KMT.
