Australia. Federal Government taking closer look at wheat freight code

THE Federal Government has announced it is reviewing the code that regulates bulk wheat port terminal service providers.

Last week Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce announced the review of the wheat port code, which had been in place since September 2014.

The code regulates bulk wheat port terminal service providers to ensure exporters have fair and transparent access to terminal facilities and was put in place following the deregulation of the wheat export market.

The code is enforced by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Mr Joyce said government was consulting with industry, growers and exporters to find out the impact of the code, if it could be improved and whether it remained necessary.

An issues paper is on the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources website.

Submissions are open until 24 November.
