Belarus. A one-week delay in grain ripening

Ripening of winter cereals and spring barley has begun mostly in the south and on light soils in Central Belarus – they are at waxy ripeness now. Grain humidity in the fields under observation is still too high at some 20-30%.

Full maturity of grain was reported in some parts of Gomel region with its humidity at 15-16% (close to standard). Grain filling still continues in cereal crops across the northern half and western and eastern areas of the country.

Due to low air temperatures, the grain-filling period was lengthy this year, roughly two or three week. This must have a beneficial effect on the ear weight value and grain yields. Because of the agro-meteorological conditions, this year’s grain ripening started with a nearly one-week delay against last year.
