Belarus. Fair weather developments for winter crops

According to the latest data, winter crops are covered with some 10-20 cm of snow in most of Belarus, while its height exceeds 20 cm in the north and some easternmost areas. Only the west and south-west of the country have less than 10 cm of snow. The soil freeze depth varies mostly from 10-20 cm to 30-40 cm.

According to the latest observations, soil temperatures at the tillering node depth of winter cereals stays mostly within 0..-1°С, i.e. above their optimum. At such soil temperatures, overwintering plants spend a bit too much nutrients.

During a short cold-spell between February 1-10, soil temperatures dropped to -2..-4°С mostly in West Belarus. Ice crust lying tight to the ground is seen in single fields in some areas across Minsk, Mogilev and Vitebsk regions, but its thickness is insignificant (5-14 mm). The near-term weather conditions will be pretty fair for winter crops as mild frost will dominate the country, reports UkrAgroConsult.
