Bird flu pulls down demand for Philippine corn

Poultry growers in the bird-flu affected areas in the Philippines are hesitant to restock their flocks, causing farmgate corn prices to dip below USD0.19 per kg. Prices of yellow corn ranged from USD0.23-0.25 per kg in August.

The Philippine Maize Federation Inc. (PhilMaize) said poultry growers are still maintaining a “wait-and-see attitude” where they would wait 15 to 30 days to buy corn after sourcing their day-old chicks. To stabilize farmgate price, PhilMaize has urged the National Food Authority (NFA) to intervene and step up its purchase of yellow corn in the region. The NFA is mandated to ensure the stability of supply and prices of staple cereals at farm and consumer levels.
