Every year Black Sea countries increase their presence on the key world grain markets. In 2016/17 such tendency will concern not only wheat and corn, but also barley.

2015/16 season was marked with stronger competition on world market due to record world barley crop (148 MMT; +6.7 MMT to the result of 2014/15 according to USDA). Higher supplies were observed mainly from the side of EU countries. Also Argentina, which had gathered additional 2 MMT of barley, was able to supply at the prices even lower than those of Black Sea at the start of 2015/16. Still, this was not an obstacle for Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan to export the second largest volume barley over the last six seasons taking 32% in the world barley exports.

Considering the decreasing EU barley production estimates due to essential slow down of French and German harvesting and excessively wet weather conditions during barley sowing in Argentina, in the new 2016/17 Black Sea countries have all the chances to take the leadership in barley export.
