Black Sea countries: spring planting campaign – 2018. Bulgaria and Kazashtan

BULGARIA. Spring planting in Bulgaria is in progress, reports UkrAgroConsult. 146.5 Th ha had been sown to grain corn by April 19, 2018 compared to 273.3 Th ha by the same date in 2017. Spring barley was planted on 1.6 Th ha (2.8 Th ha in 2017), feed peas on 19.8 Th ha (24.1 Th ha), and oats on 5.1 Th ha (8.9 Th ha).

According to the latest updates, 2018 harvest areas of winter crops will total 1260.6 Th ha, including 1138 Th ha of winter wheat (up 4% from 1096.4 Th ha in MY 2016/17), 115.8 Th ha of winter barley (down 11% from last season’s 129.8 Th ha), and 6.9 Th ha of winter rye (up 10% from last season’s 6.2 Th ha). 

KAZAKHSTAN. Seeding of spring cereals is underway in the southern regions of Kazakhstan. By April 27, farmers had seeded 55% to 96% of their area, depending on the region.

335.1 Th ha had already been seeded to spring cereals that is up 20% year-on-year. In particular, this includes 11.1 Th ha of corn for grain against 6.3 Th ha last year.

It is projected to seed 14.7 Ml ha to cereals in Kazakhstan this year, including 11.4 Ml ha to wheat (down 544 Th ha from 2017).
