Bulgaria expects record high wheat output in 2017

Bulgaria’s wheat harvest is expected to reach an all-time high of 5.85-5.95 million tonnes in 2017 on the back of an 8% year-on-year increase in the average yield to 5.13 tonnes per hectare, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.

Bulgaria harvested 5.66 million tonnes of wheat last year, the ministry said in a statement.

This year’s harvest is also expected to be of higher quality compared to last year’s, the statement reads.

Bulgaria’s wheat exports are expected to exceed 1 million tonnes by August 15, according to the ministry.

As at July 27, Bulgaria had harvested 89% of the total area sown with wheat, collecting 5.14 million tonnes, the ministry said last week.

The barley harvest amounted to 614,635 tonnes as at July 27, with 99% of the total barley-sown area harvested.
