Bulgaria exported 30% less corn in 2015/16

According to the preliminary data, in 2015/16 MY Bulgaria exported about 1430 KMT of corn, which was 30% less than the record high exports of 2014/15 – 2050 KMT. EU countries were the top market of Bulgarian corn. Same as for Bulgarian wheat, top EU importers for corn were Romania, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy.

Due to lower corn crop in 2015, in 2015/16 volumes exported to the EU-destinations decreased to 1.09 MMT against 1.5 MMT in 2014/15. Yet, the EU countries’ export share remained at 75% level in the total export structure. Shipments to China, which had been at the second place after the EU countries, almost stopped.

According to UkrAgroConsult data, only 4 KMT was shipped in this destination against 284 KMT in 2014/15. Two-fold decrease was seen in the destinations of Turkey and New Zealand.

In the contrast, Bulgarian exporters increased shipments to Arab countries almost three times to 180 KMT.

It is to be recalled that in 2016/17 UkrAgroConsult forecasts increase in export potential for Bulgarian corn compared to 2015/16, but Bulgaria will not be able to export higher volumes than record of 2014/15.
