Bulgaria remains one of key wheat suppliers in EU


Wheat and barley harvesting is almost complete in Bulgaria, and corn harvesting is approaching. Let's consider prospects for Bulgarian grain in the 2016/17 season and the main results of the 2015/16 marketing year.

Grain producers decided to expand wheat acreage for season 2016/17 after some reduction over the last three years. According to official estimate of the Agriculture Ministry, in 2015 winter wheat planted area reached nearly 1130 Th ha, which was 8% larger than a year before.

It means that UkrAgroConsult’s optimistic scenario regarding Bulgarian wheat harvest won after all, and was even surpassed.

As in case of Ukraine and Russia, favorable weather conditions allowed Bulgarian farmers to obtain all-time high wheat productivity this year. UkrAgroConsult estimates that wheat yields are 5-6% higher than the record set last season.

Within EU Bulgaria definitely remains among top-3 largest suppliers of wheat in the domestic EU market. But it should be noted that Bulgarian wheat quality was affected by heavy rainfalls in spring 2016.
