Bulgarian farmers keep reducing barley planted areas

Corn harvest in Bulgaria is drawing to an end. According to current information of Bulgaria’s Ag Ministry, corn was harvested from 400.3 Th ha (95.7%) by December 14. Its crop amounted to 2315.4 KMT with an average yield of 5.78 MT/ha (up 9.9% year-on-year).

At the same time, Bulgarian farmers are finishing the planting of winter cereals. 1100.3 Th ha was seeded to winter wheat by the reporting date, or 1% more than a year ago. Winter barley was sown on 109.8 Th ha that is 16.6% less than a year ago.

In all appearances, despite so attractive barley prices this season, Bulgarian growers keep reducing plantings of this crop. But we expect some expansion of Bulgarian wheat planted area for the 2018 harvest.
