Bulgarian sunseed balance expected to be tight in MY 2018/19

18.05.2018

Bulgarian sunseed production has been following an upward trend since three years ago. Apart from an expanding planted area, this time period saw a rise in yields. According to preliminary results of the 2017/18 season, the two factors combined brought the sunseed crop to a record level.

In the 2017/18 season, the rise in sunseed supply not only enhanced Bulgaria’s export potential  but also led to higher domestic crushing.

Bulgarian sunseed exports in September-January showed a sharp increase of over 58% against last season. This jump in exports was achieved due to strong demand from European importers, who already absorb over 82% of total exports this season against less than 80% before.

UkrAgroConsult estimates total sunseed exports in MY 2017/18 will amount 40% of the total crop. So, most of the sunseed crop will be processed inside the country – this is typical for Bulgaria since MY 2014/15.

Outlook for the new 2018/19 season

Diversification of Bulgaria’s crop sown areas in favor of rape, niche crops, and pulses is expected in the next 2018/19 season. Taking into account the current situation, UkrAgroConsult forecasts sunflower plantings to shrink somewhat.

According to Bulgaria’s Ag Ministry, sunflower planting as of May 3, 2018 was also far behind the progress of last year (down 20.5%). Farmers had sown 595.8 Th ha by that date against 749.7 Th ha a year ago.

The sunseed crop decrease will reduce both domestic crushing and exports. In addition, Bulgaria will enter the next season with lower sunseed inventories.
