Cambodian pig producers told to reshape production model

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) recently said the government will not act against live pig imports because that is against the principles agreed on by the World Trade Organisation, WTO and Asean. Sen Sovann, Director-General Of MAFF’s General-Directorate Of Animal Health And Production said: “All we can do is to apply the appropriate regulations to control imports, but we cannot ban them without solid reasons.”

In answering to the request by Cambodia Livestock Raisers Association to the government on protecting local players, MAFF said meat producers and livestock growers will have to reshape their production model in a more effective way to survive in the market and compete with importing sources.
