China targets 8mt annual beef output by 2020

28.07.2016

China has set a goal to produce 8 million tonnes of beef a year by 2020, up from 7mt in 2015, said the Ministry of Agriculture. In a guideline to promote the herbivorous animal sectors, the ministry said China should tap imports “to fill the domestic gap of meat supply, and to meet consumer demand”.

Chinese companies will also be encouraged to invest in overseas forage farms and beef processing plants, the guideline said. China imported 295,721 tonnes of beef valued at USD 1.3 billion in the first half of 2016, up 61% and 48%, respectively, from a year earlier, according to China Customs.
