China's 2018 beef imports seen to grow 15%

Beef imports are set to reach 1.1 million tonnes in 2018, a 15% year-on-year increase compared to 2017, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service said in its GAIN Report. The report forecasts domestic production will rise 0.5% to 7.1 million tonnes, boosting China’s per capita beef consumption to 6.0kg in 2018.

"Although this increase (from about 5.8 kg in 2017) is significant," the report noted. While US beef producers and exporters celebrate the return of US beef to China, initial trade volumes will be limited by the number of US cattle eligible for export to China, it added.
