Decline in Australia’s live cattle exports

Australia has exported 488,000 feeder and slaughter cattle so far, with numbers to Indonesia down 25% for the year-to-date – its lowest levels since 2013, reported Weekly Times. Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said Australian cattle exports have been challenged by “tight domestic availability, high cattle prices, an appreciating Australian dollar and a host of in-market challenges”.

Indian buffalo meat, and lower priced Thai cattle increasingly meeting import requirements in Malaysia and Vietnam, were also having an impact on Australian exports, according to MLA. However, it reported shipments of feeder and slaughter cattle to Indonesia in August hit 76,500 heads, the largest monthly shipment there in 21 months.
