Demand for grain transportation declines in Black Sea region

10.08.2016

In the Black Sea region, the situation in the Panamax segment is getting worse. Free fleet supply in the spot market increased, while demand for grain shipment from Russia, Ukraine and Romania decreased slightly.

At the same time, according to information service "Promyshlennye gruzy", demand remained stable in the Black Sea region, consequently freight rates for grain transportation by Handy vessels were also steady. Ship owners were awaiting further increase in grain shipments from ports of Ukraine, Russia, Romania, and were reluctant to move their fleet to other regions. But amid sufficient supply of free tonnage, grain exporters and importers did not hurry to make new deals.

In the coaster segment a slight increase in grain freight rates was observed – by only USD 0.25-0.5/MT. However, in this segment the number of free tonnage offers also grew.
