Demand for native, coloured chicken in Indonesia to surge

Demand for native chicken and coloured chicken in Indonesia is predicted to increase by 80% this year. According to Ade Zulkarnain, Chairman of Indonesia’s Local Poultry Farmers Association (Himpuli), the demand is driven by increasing number of middle class with higher disposable income.

“Of the total demand, 70% is from households and the remaining is from the horeca industry. For native chicken, the main markets are West Java and Sumatera while the main markets for coloured chicken are in Jogjakarta, Central Java and East Java,” said Mr Zulkarnain. Considering the increasing demand, he urged stakeholders to participate in industrialising the sector. In another development, Himpuli is looking for potential export markets for native chicken and coloured chicken.
