31.01.2019

Egypt’s agriculture ministry said on Wednesday it saw local wheat production for the 2018-2019 season at 9.5 million tonnes.

The figure compares with 9 million tonnes of local production last season, agriculture ministry spokesman Hamid Abdel Dayem told Reuters.

A total of 3.2 million feddans (1.3 million hectares) are expected to be planted with wheat, of which 3 million have already been planted, he said. Egypt planted 2.9 million feddans last season.

Egypt, the world’s largest wheat importer, procures around 3 million tonnes of wheat from its local crop a year to use in its subsidized bread programme.
