EU stepping up imports of Ukrainian peas


The current season expectedly started with a rapid pace of pea exports. Ukraine exported some 97.9 KMT of peas in September 2017, or 233% more than in the same month last year (42.1 KMT was in September 2016).

Ukrainian pea exports totaled 211.6 KMT in July-September 2017/18. For now, this is down 11% year-on-year (237.4 KMT in July-September 2016/17), reports UkrAgroConsult.

Traditionally, the key end market for Ukrainian peas in the reporting period was India (33%). The pea season started with record supplies to the market of Myanmar. Ukraine exported some 40 KMT of peas to this country in July-September 2017/18 against 4.5 KMT for the whole 2016/17 season.

Strengthening demand is reported from the European Union, too. EU countries imported 33.2 KMT of peas from Ukraine in the period under review, or already 57% more than for the whole past season (21.1 KMT).

As a reminder, Ukraine exported a record 487 KMT of peas in the 2016/17 season. Ukrainian exports of this pulse are expected to further increase this season.
