Farmers in Moldova complete planting of corn and sunflower

08.05.2018

Moldova. Abnormally warm and mostly dry weather dominated the country from April 30 to May 6.

The average weekly air temperature was +20..+22ºС, or 6-8ºС above normal. Air temperatures peaked at +33ºС and bottomed out at +5ºС.

Mostly no precipitation was seen throughout the week, except for at most 1-4 mm (10-35% of normal) in some areas.

Excessive warmth and precipitation shortfalls persisting over the week led to intensive evaporation of topsoil moisture. This deteriorated conditions for growth and development of crops.

At the time, the emergence of lower stem nodes was registered in winter crops, even flowering started in some fields.

Planting of corn and sunflower was drawing to an end. The average soil temperature at a 10 cm depth was at +18..+24ºС.
