Flour exports from Russia down 40%

19.07.2017

Russia continued exporting flour in small volumes toward the end of 2016/17 season. 140.9 KMT of flour was shipped abroad from the country in the eleven months of the season, or 40% less than at the same time last year (236 KMT was exported in July-May 2015/16).

It is also worth noting that Russian flour production fell by 6% in 2016/17 season. 8.611 MMT of flour was made in Russia in July-May 2016/17 against 9.161 MMT in the same period in 2015/16 season.

At the same time, China became the top buyer of Russian flour in 2016/17 season. Despite the overall drop in flour exports from Russia, shipments to China, on the contrary, continued rising. Russia exported over 57 KMT of flour to this market in the period under review, i.e. already 57% more than for the whole past season. This is a record volume of Russian flour imported by China.

Correspondingly, its shipments to the remaining end markets fell substantially. In particular, exports to the UAE, last year’s top importer of Russian flour, were down 26% at 23.7 KMT. Exports to Georgia plummeted three and a half times (to 8.9 KMT).
