Food Products Sustain Rice Demand


While consumption of rice itself has fallen, the use of the grain in processed food has driven sustained demand.

Statistics Korea said Tuesday that the food and drink industries used 658,869 tons of rice last year, up 14.5 percent from 2015. Rice wine breweries consumed 33.7 percent followed by rice cake makers (25.7 percent) and cooked meal businesses (15.2 percent).

In contrast, rice consumption fell to 61.9 kg per capita last year, down 1.0 kg from a year earlier.

This suggests that each Korean consumes less than 1.7 bowls of rice per day.
