Government to hold talks with industry on Brazil meat imports

The Philippine Department of Agriculture will hold a public consultation with industry stakeholders before it decides to lift the ban on meat imports from Brazil. Some livestock groups have opposed the lifting of the ban, saying it isn’t free from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and can be a huge concern for public health and safety.

The Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines and the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura have urged the government to maintain the ban. Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the lifting the ban will not mean indiscriminate importation but will ensure strict implementation of health protocols.
