Govt may Levy 15% Import Duty on Wheat

03.03.2017

Ahead of the wheat harvesting season beginning next month, the government is considering whether to continue the commodity's duty-free imports as it has to ensure the fine balance between enough supplies and sufficient farm-gate prices in the event of a bumper crop.

Food minister Ram Vilas Paswan and agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh are expected to meet in the next few days to take stock of the crop position and the duty structure, said an official familiar with the matter. \x93With the government anticipating a bumper crop of 96.5 million tonnes, we want to ensure that farmers get remunerative prices and don't sell in distress owing to cheaper wheatimports. The ministers will meet on this subject in the next few days,\x93 said an official from the food ministry .

He said meetings with officials from finance and commerce ministries were also scheduled in the days ahead. Over 5.5 MT of wheat have been imported and contracted this year, the official said.
