Grain harvest in Ukraine slowed down because of rain

The grain harvest in Ukraine is still ahead of last year. However, rainy weather has slowed it down substantially. So, while this work was 133% the progress of last year a week ago, the year-over-year advance had decreased more than three times, to 39%, by July 23. A 5% lag is already observed in barley harvesting progress.

In addition, precipitation reduces potential wheat and barley yields still more because heavy rains lead to grain drop. Moreover, grain germination is already reported, indicating that most of the wheat still remaining in the field (roughly one-third) will be of feed quality. Thus, the share of milling wheat in this year’s crop may end up below 50%.
