India’s PEC issues tender to import 40,000 tones corn

Indian state-run trading company PEC has issued a new international tender to buy and import 40,000 tonnes yellow corn (maize), European traders said on Monday.

The tender closes on July 22 and offers must remain valid up to July 29, they said.

PEC had on Friday also issued a tender to buy 80,000 tonnes of yellow corn closing on July 21 and with offers remaining valid up to July 24, while the state-run Trading Corp of India is also tendering for corn.

The new tender from PEC again sought corn free of genetically-modified organisms (GMOs), they said.

Shipment is sought between July 25 to Aug. 10, they said.

On July 10, the Indian government said it has asked government-backed traders to import an extra half a million tonnes of duty-free, non-genetically modified corn to keep a lid on domestic prices and overcome any shortage.
