Indonesia issues permits for live cattle imports from Mexico

Indonesia’s Ministry of Agriculture has issued import permits to live cattle importers for 200,000 heads of feeder cattle and 200,000 heads of breeder cattle from Mexico.

“The imports can start this year,” said Andi Amran Sulaiman, Minister of Agriculture. Mr Sulaiman believes imports of breeder cattle will positively contribute to his ministry’s target of beef self-sufficiency. Enggartiasto Lukita, Minister of Trade said previously the importers depended on Australia, “but now they have a choice. They can import from Mexico.” According to Mr Lukita, Mexico offers competitive live cattle prices and their cattle have good production performance.
