Indonesian farmers worry about imports

Following Brazil’s victory in the case raised with the WTO, broiler farmers in Indonesia worry that Brazilian chicken will negatively affect their business. “Our chicken price is much higher than Brazilian chicken due to the high price of feed,” said Singgih Januratmoko, Chairman of Pinsar Indonesia, an Indonesian poultry farmers association.

“The production of broilers now is around 60-65 million birds per week, while demand is only at 55 million birds. When added with Brazilian chicken, the price of live birds will fall even further,” he explained. Therefore, he hopes the government will have a solution to protect the local broiler industry. “I think halal requirement is the only technical barrier,” he said.
