Kazakhstan. Less favorable year-end conditions for winter crops

On December 21-31, winter crops in the south and south-east of the country were exposed to less favorable weather conditions for their survival. Precipitation rates were mostly below normal there. Steady snow cover is seen in winter crop fields in Almaty region. Most of Jambyl and Turkistan regions are snow-free – this may lead to frost-kill of crops in case of an air temperature drop, reports UkrAgroConsult.

In growing areas across the West Kazakhstan region, winter grains are still under steady snow cover (15-29 cm) that protects plants if evenly distributed over the ground. Therefore, low ground-surface temperatures (21-33˚С below zero) were not that dangerous to their survival.

The lowest soil temperature at the depth of winter wheat tillering node varied from -5˚С to +1˚С.
