Kazakhstan received the status of a zone free from FMD

Kazakhstan received the status of a zone free from foot and mouth disease, reported the first Vice-Minister of agriculture of Kazakhstan Kairat Aituganov.

"The government of Kazakhstan and the International Epizootic Bureau (IEB) signed an agreement on the program of cooperation in the field of veterinary medicine. As a result of purposeful work on prevention of foot and mouth disease, strict adherence to the strategy of FMD control in accordance with international standards on 25 May 2017 in Paris there was held the official ceremony of awarding of the certificate on assigning Kazakhstan the status of a zone free from FMD," said K. Aituganov at a press conference in the government on Friday.

He reminded that in the former Soviet Union Belarus and Ukraine are historically free from FMD, and Russia in 2016 has the status of a country having only certain regions free from FMD. Other CIS countries have no such a status.

"The status allows the country to export to the countries — members of the world trade organization, products of animal and vegetable origin, which will allow realizing the export potential of our agriculture and positively affect the development of foreign trade activities of domestic entrepreneurs," — said the speaker.

According to him, the competent authority of the PRC in veterinary medicine (Chief Department of quality supervision, inspection and quarantine) in September last year removed restrictions on foot and mouth disease on the basis of the decision of the IEB in 9 regions of Kazakhstan. The Committee of veterinary control of the Ministry of agriculture of Kazakhstan and the Chinese side will continue efforts to remove restrictions in the remaining 5 regions on the basis of the received status. The Gulf countries, Iran and Israel on the basis of the received status are ready to agree to the resolution of Kazakhstan for export of animal products from the entire territory of the country.

As indicated in the common information of the Ministry of agriculture, veterinary service of Kazakhstan in August 2016 formally submitted a dossier to the IEB to obtain the status of a zone free from FMD with vaccination in five regions — Almaty, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Kyzylorda and South Kazakhstan. In October 2016, February and March 2017 following the meeting of the Scientific Commission IEB there was issued a decision on preliminary approval of the application of the RK.
