Malaysia. Sugar prices will not be increased, says Minister

23.05.2017

There is no reason to increase the price of sugar as the Government already sanctioned a hike of 11 sen per kilogramme last March, says Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

"A supplier had a meeting with me recently and asked me to consider increasing the price of sugar by 49 sen. I told them, no way," said the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister.

"It is only fair to maintain it at the current price," said Hamzah, at a press conference after his ministry's monthly assembly here.

The Government announced that the price of coarse granulated white sugar would be capped at RM2.95 per kg, from RM2.84 per kg, effective March 1.

Hamzah also added that the world market price of sugar had actually gone down.

"It is not like the suppliers are suffering from the costs. They are still making money," he said.
