Malaysia Wants China To Make Palm Oil Its Biggest Edible Oil Import

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wants China to make Malaysian palm oil as its biggest edible oil import in the country again.
The issue was raised at his meeting with China's President Xi Jinping during the delegation's meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guest House here today.
According to Najib, Xi welcomed the proposal and believed that it would help raise the earnings of the smallholders following the downturn in palm oil demand recently.
Last Tuesday, Najib had raised the issue of the fall in palm oil import from China in his meeting with his counterpart, Li Keqiang.
China's imports of Malaysian palm oil plunged by 50 per cent in January-June 2016 compared to the same period in 2015, possibly due to some negative reports and wrong perceptions on the nutritional value of palm oil.
Yet, the positive results from the studies, including research done by China, showed that palm oil was a nutritious edible oil.
Malaysia was once the top edible palm oil exporter to China and was now behind Indonesia and European Union.
