Moldova. No winter-kill threat to crops


Colder-than-usual weather with precipitation dominated the country on February 19-25.

The average weekly air temperature was -2.0.. -4.5ºС, i.e. 1-2ºС below normal. The lowest air temperature was registered at -15ºС. Precipitation in the form of snow, sleet and rain occurred throughout the week. Their total weekly rate was 6-12 mm (75-150% of normal) in 70% of Moldova and 2-5 mm (25-60% of normal) in the remainder of the country.

Snow cover was seen in the country throughout the week. Towards the weekend, its height was mostly <8-16 cm, locally 3-6 cm (mainly in the south). The soil freezing depth was mostly 2-10 cm by the weekend. During the week, the lowest soil temperature at the tillering node depth of winter crops (3 cm) was registered at 0..-2ºС that is far above the critical level (-15ºС).  

The conditions were fair for the survival of winter crops, reports UkrAgroConsult.
