Nearly half of Argentine wheat in good or excellent condition -exchange

Nearly half of the wheat Argentine farmers have planted for the 2018-19 crop year is in good or excellent condition due to adequate soil moisture during the planting period, the Buenos Aires grains exchange said on Thursday.

Through Wednesday, farmers had planted 95.6 percent of the record-high 6.1 million hectares they are expected to sow with the grain this crop year, the exchange said in its weekly report. Three-quarters of the wheat had enough moisture, and 44 percent was in good or excellent condition.

The exchange added that 20.1 percent of the 5.7 million hectares planted with commercial-use corn for the drought-stricken 2017-18 crop had not yet been harvested. That harvest is seen at 31 million tonnes, far below initial estimates due to drought damage.

Argentina is one of the world's largest wheat exporters and the No. 3 shipper of corn.
