New developments in farming practices. Ukrainian manufacturers designed a biodegradable mulch film

Research results have confirmed the efficiency of the biodegradable mulch film, developed by the R&D department of IMMER Group. Field trials demonstrated that mulching of soil with biodegradable film boosts vegetation development despite limited moisture in soil and improves yields by 71%. The launch of industrial production of biodegradable mulching film will take place at the IMMER Ukrplastic plant in early 2018.

“We have produced a material which caters the needs of modern agrarians, makes provisions for effective and sustainable agricultural production under conditions of global climate changes. Our biodegradable mulching film is an ecofriendly solution that boosts crops and ensures better development of agricultural plants. We are sure that our product will make significant contribution to the sustainable development of our agricultural production,” said the president of IMMER Group Irina Mirochnik.

Biodegradable mulching film of IMMER Group can be successfully employed in organic and traditional agriculture for growing vegetable and grain crops: tomatoes, garlic, onions, carrots, beets, cabbage, pumpkin, corn, sunflower, rapeseed, soy, peas, beans, and other.

The results of comparative analysis of grain maize growth and vegetation processes at the end of field trials, showed tangible benefits of using the biodegradable mulching film versus traditional, non-mulching agriculture technology. The agro-technological solution, proposed by IMMER Group, decreases the amount of crop protection agents in 3 times, improves plant development in 1,4 times and increases crop yields by 71% in limited soil moisture supply.

Owing to its properties, biodegradable mulching film improves crop yields, preventing rapid evaporation of moisture from the soil and improving the microclimate in the planting zone, which is critically important in the context of the global change of agro-climatic resources. In organic farming IMMER Group’s biodegradable film allows increasing crop yields without using chemical crop protection agents, and also protects seeds from birds.

The biodegradable film is 100% degradable. The tests showed no visible traces of the film in the soil after 6 months from the laying day. This quality is an important argument not only for the environment, but also for agrarians, who can save their resources on collection and utilization of non-degradable mulching film.

"It has been established experimentally that the biodegradable film, provided for testing, corresponds to the declared parameters of its decomposition and provides advantages in the processes of growth and development of maize plants as compared to those without the use of the film. The peculiarity of the study was the atypical arid conditions of 2017 that settled during the maize growing season. In such critical conditions of moisture supply, the yield increased by 71% in comparison with the control samples – without the use of the film" –said the head of the department of scientific expertise of technologies, yield forecasting and agrotechnical evaluation of the L. Pogorelyi R&D Institute, Ph.D., Nataliya Neguliayeva.

Industrial production of black and transparent biodegradable mulch film of IMMER Group starts at the IMMER Ukrplastic plant in Ukraine in early 2018. Physical parameters, film thickness and width of rolls are selected individually, depending on the crop type and other conditions.

Research information:

The research was carried out by the “Leonid Pogorelyi Ukrainian R&D Institute of Forecasting and Testing of Technique and Technologies of Agricultural Manufacturing" from April to October 2017 in the crop rotation land of the Kiev region in accordance with the standard methods of research in agronomy. The objects of the research were: the processes of growth, development and formation of the corn crop of grain maize "Vnuchchin" in the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine, as well as the processes of decomposition of the biodegradable film.
