Oilseed exports from Bulgaria

Bulgarian oilseed exports gradually decreased from 1.45 MMT in MY 2010/11 to 1.2 MMT in MY 2016/17 (from this point onward, exports for the whole marketing year of 2016/17 imply UkrAgroConsult’s forecast). Export capacity of any nation results primarily from the harvest. The diagram below illustrates how the export curve depends on oilseed crop dynamics.

Sunseed accounts for the lion’s share of Bulgaria’s oilseed exports and production. Still, the export portion of sunseed shrank from 64% to 58% between MY 2010/11 and MY 2016/17, while that of rapeseed, on the contrary, grew from 36% to 42%.

Bulgarian exports of rapeseed, as well as its production, are unstable. Following an upturn period in the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons, when supplies to foreign markets exceeded 0.5 MMT, they plummeted to 0.25-0.27 MMT in MY 2012/13 and MY 2013/14. Some recovery of exports in MY 2014/15 (0.47 MMT) gave way to their repeated decline (0.32 MMT) in MY 2015/16. 0.49 MMT out of 2016/17 exportable stocks has been shipped abroad.
