Pakistan. Wheat export increases by 100 percent in first quarter


Wheat export from the country during first three months of the current financial year witnessed 100 percent increase, as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

During the period from July-September 2016, about 293 metric tonnes wheat worth $0.96 million was exported against nil exports during the same period of last year, according the data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. On month-on-month basis, wheat export from the country during the month of September also grew by 100 percent as 150 metric tonnes of the commodity was exported during the period under review.

It is worth mentioning that the government has set a target to produce 26.01 million tonnes of wheat during the current Rabi season (2016-17) to fulfill the domestic requirements of the staple food as well as to export it. The wheat crop would be cultivated over 9.12 million hectares of land across the country where as over 25.4 million ton wheat were produced during last season.

The domestic requirements were recorded at 25.5 million tonnes per annum, whereas it is expected that over three million tonnes carry forward stocks would also be available for consumption. However, during the first three months of current financial year, sugar export reduced by 100 percent as no quantity of sugar was exported. It may be recalled that food group exports decreased by 20.09 percent as it came down to $634.62 million from $794.18 million in last three months.
