Persistently strong position of Russia in the global pulse market

04.12.2018

Following the 2017/18 season, which was successful for Russia’s market of grains and pulses, the country’s producers were not ready to rest.

Russia continued expanding pulse planted acreage for the 2018 harvest at a record pace. It gained another 25% in MY 2018/19, reaching an all-time high level. Undoubtedly, this acreage expansion cannot but target peas as the country’s main pulse crop. Russian pea plantings for the 2018 harvest were increased to by another 10.5%, reaching an all-time high.

However, in view of moisture shortage and a grain yield decline, UkrAgroConsult’s forecasts this year’s pea output in 2018 drop.

Nonetheless, in terms of global pea production, Russia still accounts for nearly a quarter of the market and is the second biggest grower after Canada.

This season’s export potential is estimated to be slightly lower, but there are doubts about its realization. The factors of global competition, restrictions in major importing countries, and a slow pace of Russian pea exports in the first months of the season still pose a risk of failure to realize this export potential in full.
