PH rice production ‘to get a boost’ in 2017

The Department of Agriculture revealed plans on boosting the production of rice seeds and rice farmlands by 2017.

Agriculture secretary Manny Piñol, during the inauguration of a modern rice seed processing facility recently, said the DA plans to launch programs for the commercialization of local rice seed production and to expand rice fields by at least 1 million hectares starting next year.

“Good genetics and good farm management are two factors the DA needs to focus on to be able to sync our strategies with the vision of the president towards affordable and accessible food for every Filipino,” Piñol said, stressing the importance of good breeding materials in achieving the food sufficiency.

“To be able to achieve that dream, we have to provide more good seeds for farmers.”

Piñol, on December 6, led the inauguration of the $4-million processing facility funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) through the “Enhancing the Capacity of Production and Distribution of High Quality Rice Seeds” program.

The 1,000-square-meter facility aims to speed up the processing time and certification for rice seeds. The building hopes to encourage farmers to use high-quality seeds.

Farmers were also given equipment and training.

“By using the right seeds, a 10-percent increase on farmers’ rice yield every year is possible,” Piñol noted.

Piñol said the DA seeks to set up other rice facilities in other rice producing areas in the country.
