Philippine swine farmers concerned over land conversion

Swine farmers have expressed their concerns on the recent conversion of agricultural land into commercial and residential areas. Chester Warren Tan of the National Federation of Hog Farmers said that in the last two years, some farm lands in Southern Luzon and Southern Mindanao—despite having been identified as agricultural zones by the government—have been converted into commercial or residential areas, thus, limiting space for livestock farmers or even evicting them in their designated areas.

Buying agricultural land and converting them to industrial areas is much cheaper for real estate investors says Mr Tan. He has appealed to local government units to reject these proposals to protect livestock farmers, particularly the small operators.
