Philippine swine industry braces for meat imports from US

With high tariff rates being slapped on the US by some of its major markets like China, some local producers have expressed concern that American pork will flood the country. An industry source told Asian Agribiz that the US-China trade war will greatly affect local pork trade as the US is expected to send its pork shipments to the Philippines.

“Although we are not directly involved, the US-China trade war will greatly affect us. With an impending 25% tariff on Chinese steel, China of course will retaliate and will do the same by slapping higher taxes on US meat exports. So what will the US do? They will bring all their meat to other countries that are least resistant or those with weak international trade regulations such as the Philippines,” the source said.
