Philippines may lose Japan poultry market

Without a bird-flu clearance, the Philippines is set to lose its long-time lucrative poultry market of Japan. According to Arlyn Vytiaco, animal health and welfare division chief of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), Japan may be forced to buy its chicken supplies from other countries in 2018 after Tokyo banned Philippine poultry products in August over bird flu.

Dr Vytiaco said local cold storages are concerned about losing the yakitori exports if the country isn’t cleared from bird flu. She also said Japan has been in constant communication with BAI to ask for updates and monitor the country’s bird-flu status.
